Safeguarding Adults Week 2024

Last week we celebrated national Safeguarding Adults Week; a week where organisations across the country come together to raise awareness of important safeguarding adults issues.

In Newcastle, the Board’s Improving Practice Committee organised a number of webinars, a Speed Geeking Event and attended a Jobs, Employment, Training (JET) event at Westgate College.

Webinars

The webinars covered a wide range of topics: Prevent, self-neglect, domestic abuse perpetrator interventions, stigma and it’s impact, writing safeguarding policies and procedures, adults at risk of exploitation research, language and victim-blaming, InformationNOW, hoarding and fire risks and homelessness and rough sleeping in Newcastle. Just short of 400 people logged onto the webinars, with some attracting interest from across the UK.

Pass on my thanks to Kerry for her expertise across both sessions and also to Kath, I can honestly say they were possibly one of the most interesting and engaging webinars I have attended, and their commitment to research and practice shines through. (Feedback from webinar participant)

At a North of Tyne webinar, the new Self-Neglect Policy was launched alongside hearing from expert speakers on health and self-neglect, hoarding and housing and self-neglect.

Safeguarding Adults Speed Geeking @ Strawberry Lane

At our Safeguarding Adults “Speed Geeking” event participants had the opportunity to learn about different topics linked to safeguarding adults in a short time slot, whilst also being able to ask questions and discuss the issue in a more informal setting. Table hosts covered: advocacy, safeguarding carers, working with older people, InformationNOW, engagement, and bias and unconscious bias.

White Ribbon Event @ Westgate College

We had a presence at a White Ribbon Information, Wellbeing and Fun Day organised by JET (Jobs, Education and Training). We hosted a stall and participated in the event’s quiz, asking attendees to find out who they would report concerns to if they were worried about adult abuse or neglect. This was a great opportunity to get safeguarding adults messages out to members of the public.
